Volunteering
How volunteering at SYLC works.
SYLC is a voluntary club run by Senergy Ltd. These are the rules that keep it genuinely voluntary, fair and safe.
- Voluntary means voluntary. There is no obligation to attend, no set hours and no penalty for pausing, for example around exams.
- No pay, no rewards. We don’t pay members and there are no rewards or benefits in kind. We repay agreed out-of-pocket expenses against receipts.
- Not a job, and no promise of one. Membership does not promise paid work, a placement or a contract.
- Practice material, not client work. Club assignments are development exercises built on public, synthetic or sanitised material. When Senergy or one of its ventures needs real work done, for example a live grant application, it offers it separately as a paid engagement or as a placement that a member’s course requires.
- Support. You are matched with a mentor when you join, and a fellow sponsors you.
- Your year. Each active window brings an optional stretch assignment: A1 contribute, A2 a big leap, A3 a turnaround and A4 build something from zero. You can present your work at Pitch Night in March and Capstone Day in September. Exam seasons are light.
- Leadership. Every October a new President and Vice President take office for one year, and nobody is re-elected to the same role. The board appoints the 2026–27 executive in October 2026. From 2027 members elect the President and Vice President in early April, the board ratifies the result, and the newly elected pair shadow the executive from late June.
- Who can join. Membership is for adults. Under-18s take part only in our supervised youth format, with parental consent (see Safeguarding).
- Confidentiality and fairness. Anyone who sees non-public Senergy or partner material first signs a confidentiality agreement. Fellows and officers declare conflicts of interest to the board.
