Projects

Projects that build leaders.

SYLC projects are development exercises. They draw on themes from Senergy’s work in energy and biotech but use public, synthetic or sanitised material. Each has a member who leads it and a fellow who sponsors them. When Senergy or one of its ventures needs real work done, it offers it separately as a paid engagement or as a placement a member’s course requires.

BioCelliX: a case study in biotech spin-out leadership

BioCelliX is a research-stage Senergy venture exploring whether physical features of dividing cells, such as membrane tension, cell shape and how long division takes, could one day help flag cancer risk. It is not a medical device and is not available for clinical use.

  • What members do: use a sanitised version of the BioCelliX story as a case study: mapping the funding landscape, drafting a mock grant plan and pitching it to fellows acting as an investment board. They do not work on BioCelliX’s live applications.
  • Leadership learned: how spin-outs are governed, how regulatory pathways shape a plan, and how to tell an investor-ready story.

Subsurface in 3D: reservoirs you can explore in a browser

Interactive 3D models of reservoirs and geothermal systems, with layered geology, well trajectories and property maps, built for the web so engineers, investors and students can explore a subsurface asset without specialist software.

Members build the visualisation pipeline and the explainer content on public data, guided by fellows in reservoir engineering, geomodelling and quantitative seismic interpretation.

  • Skills built: geomodelling concepts, 3D graphics, data pipelines and communicating uncertainty to non-specialists.

An AI co-pilot for integrated reservoir management

Machine learning and agentic AI applied to the reservoir workflow: automated history matching, uncertainty-based what-if scenarios and dashboards that turn noisy field data into decisions, built and tested on synthetic models.

“Engineers can leverage AI as a co-pilot in Integrated Reservoir Management, using it for real-time simulations, predictive modeling, and optimization while focusing on strategic decision-making, ethical oversight, and sustainability.”

Dr Rahim Masoudi, SYLC fellow, in the SPE IRMTS Newsletter, Issue 3, October 2025.

Energy transition

Carbon storage and transition think tank

Screening mature fields for CO₂ storage, ESG data analysis, climate-risk adaptation and energy project finance, drawing on members in chemical engineering, economics, law and investment.

Communications

SYLC brand and digital presence

The club’s identity, motion logo, website and social channels on the Senergy brand, owned by the communications portfolio with the web and UX members.

Fundraising & partnerships

Partners and funding desk

Building relationships with universities, societies and sponsors, and the funding that lets the club scale, led by the fundraising and partnerships officers.

How projects run

Every project, the same discipline.

  • A member who leads the work
  • A fellow or senior member who sponsors and coaches
  • A clear brief, milestones and a quarterly review with the board
  • A learning output: a report, a prototype, a mock application or a pitch
  • Members from at least two disciplines on every team
